How to Dress for your Body Shape

Let's face it, we're not perfect. We all have things we would like to change about our body. Some people spend hours trying to figure out which styles suit their body shape but those days are over. I have put together a "how to" guide on how to dress for your body shape. Everything you need from clothing, accessories and shoes that will make your body look phenomal, regardless of the size or shape.

In my opinion, body shapes can be broken down into three categories: busty, pear-shaped and curvy.

Busty

Busty women generally have smaller hips, legs, arms and waist but are very "blessed" in the chest area. Some of Hollywood's celebrities who have been considered busty include Britney Spears, Penelope Cruz and Jessica Simpson. The best articles of clothing to choose are v-neck designs which will accentuate your breasts. Make sure you choose the right styles of v-neck tops, otherwise you'll end up looking a little trashy. If you want to show off your chest, necklaces will do the trick but if you're a little self conscious about the twins, you may want to stay away from necklaces, scarves or any other accessories that draw attention to the area.

Pear-Shaped

Pear shaped women are recognized as having smaller chests and averaged sizes waists with larger hips and a bigger bottom. Some of Hollywood's most popular pear-shaped women include Jennifer Lopez, Minnie Driver and Vanessa Minnillo. If you're pear-shaped and looking for the best way to accentuate your assets there are a number of effective techniques. First of all, skirts and dresses will make your hips and bottom look smaller - stay away from jeans and other tighter pants. Also, choose shirts with lots of detailing towards the top. This will draw the eye away from your hips and bottom and focus more on your neck, chest and face. Necklaces are a great accessory for pear-shaped women but stay away from bracelets. When your hands are at your side, bracelets draw attention to the hip area which is not an ideal area for women of this body shape.

Curvy

Curvy women are those blessed with full-figured bodies. Sometimes it is difficult to determine which clothes look best on curvier women because it differs from person to person. Much like bustier women, if curvy women choose clothing that's a little more provocative they may end up looking very trashy. Covergirl model, Queen Latifah knows how to rock the full-figured look and looks good in almost anything. If you have a curvacious body and would like to accentuate what you've got, choose shirts that are flowy and whimsical. These will hide certain aspects of your body while making you look feminine and beautiful. Likewise, skirts tend to look better on curvier women, as opposed to jeans or dress pants.

I"m surprised that Queen Latifah is considered curvy here. She wears girdles. she is not cury. Her tummy is actually a big, bulging tummy. Apple-shaped lady. She's is not hour-glass curvy. It's mis-leading. Her real body-shape, pre-breast reduction and pre-girdle, is rectangular. I think her asset is her gorgeous, lushish face.

Talk about evil comments regarding, The Queen. Are you telling me that women who wear body control, which is used to look presentable in your clothing is considered fat and shapeless! A fat shapeless buldge? I'm so confused? Is she not a full-figured woman? Is that not curvaceous? Why is JLo the only woman who can be considered curvaceous? This society is all backwards...and her personality is her best feature! Not her face.. she's positive and presents an image that uplifts all women....skinny or curvy!

How is anyone supposed to see the value of this fashion ideas? They show celebrities with the body shapes they describe as "curvy" or "pear" or whatever. Then show our MUST HAVE items hanging on stick-figure models!

I'm not quite getting how this is flattering...

I agree with Jr. The media has brianwashed society into thinking that the only way you can look good in a designer dress is if you are a size 2. This misconception has driven people into thinking that only small size woman can have curves. Well that is absolutly wrong I'm a full figure woman and I'm blessed with an hour glass shape. People need to stop watching tv and reading those horrific magizines because they brain wash society. Full figure woman can have a nice ass, hips, and butt you may not have all of those features butt if you are blessed with one or two of those features then your are a cury woman.

I agree with JR and Bojinse... I had a breast reduction for medical reasons (backaches, neckaches) and needed it long before I gained the weight associated with my pregnancy, but I have always been curvy. Large breasts, wide hips, and yes, a bit of a tummy, but I would still have been considered an hour-glass figure because my waist was smaller than above and below. Remember, an hour glass doesn't have to be toothpick-thin in the middle to be considered that shape - have you ever seen The Wizard of Oz? And I'll bet there are plenty of other women, even famous ones, who wear underclothes that help to control and define their shapes - that doesn't mean they're falsely claiming to be what shape they are; they're simply accentuating their good features and minimizing the bad ones. That's the point of all the different styles and cuts of clothing they try to sell us. The fashion industry and media have completely brainwashed our society as a whole into believing that the only shape that is acceptable is one that makes a woman look like a prepubescent boy. Excuse me, but those are NOT curves if you look like you could replace one of the columns on the Lincoln Memorial. And when you're driving and are warned that the road ahead is curvy, you should be prepared to turn your steering wheel in one direction or another to go around a curve, not keep heading in the same general direction - unless you want to drive off the road.

I have always struggled with finding clothes that fit me just right. I don’t know how many times I have gone to the mall only to come home in total frustration, vowing to never shop again. Usually, I try on 50 different things and find something wrong with each one of the items I pick.
For some reason, the clothes always look better on the hanger, only to make me want to scream when I try them on. Completely frustrated after a recent shopping nightmare, I did some research.
I found a website that has really helped. It helped me understand my body type and why certain things look better than others. They used a very creative way to describe my body shape. As it turns out, I am a Sapphire.
If you are like me, and hate shopping because of the frustration involved, check it out. The website is www.holobi.com. I am not sure if I will buy any of the clothes from the site because I like trying things on first, but I did buy the holobi product and love it.

Can’t wait to go shopping!!!

i understand why people ask why queen latifah is considered curvy. im very busty, have an hourglass figure with a small waist and a big bum and consider myself curvy, and im a size 12/14. when i look under 'curvy' i see clothes for a plus size woman, which wouldn't flatter my figure. x
