While Paris Hilton's new BFF, Britney Spears topped Yahoo's Search list for 2006, the heiress took the gold when it came to the most popular Google News searched term this year. That's right, the 25 year old "Simple Life" star was the number 1 most searched news term of 2006.

Surprising to most people, Hilton even beat out searches for World Cup Soccer and 'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin's death. What took me by surprise was the actor who stole the number 2 position. "Pirates of the Caribbean" star Orlando Bloom fell just short of topping the list - not someone I would have picked to even make the top 10.
Regardless, Paris and Britney have both topped Yahoo and Google's search terms for 2006. While the two have had their fair share of success in the past year, topping Google News is not always a good thing for young celebrities. In fact, the majority of news articles regarding Paris Hilton are citing her bad partying habits and on again/off again relationships with friends.
Some of the other terms that topped Google News this year include:
- Cancer
- Bankruptcy
- Hurricane Katrina
- Podcasting
- 2006 NFL Draft
- Celebrity Big Brother
- Autism
- Martina Hingis
