With all the awards handed out and acceptance speeches given, the focus can now turn to red carpet style.
There was a definite feeling of restraint on this year’s red carpet; for the most part the dresses were unfussy with clean lines and simple shapes, free of the overdone glitz and glamour of years past. The effect was elegant, refined, and simply stunning.
Trend: Metallic
This year, the glitterati chose satiny fabrics to help them shine on the red carpet. Rachel Weisz evoked a hint of old Hollywood glamour in champagne colored Vera Wang, and Jada Pinkett-Smith emulated the Oscar statue in a fitted gold gown by Carolina Herrera. Best Supporting Actress winner, Jennifer Hudson, also embraced the metallic trend in an ensemble by Oscar de la Renta.

Trend: Rich Jewel Tones
Dark and dramatic colors were a favorite with many stars this year. Best dressed in this category goes to Reese Witherspoon, in a stunning inky purple dress by Nina Ricci. The other nominees – Maggie Gyllenhaal in Proenza Schuler, and Portia De Rossi in Zac Posen.

Trend: Pale Hues
While dramatic shades dominated the red carpet this year, there were still plenty of celebs that wanted to keep it light. Kate Winslet looked ethereal in a light green Valentino gown, Penelope Cruz floated down the red carpet in a blush colored Versace confection, and Cameron Diaz looked chic in white Valentino.

Trend: Shimmering Sheaths
Despite the lack of glittering accessories, there was still some glitz. Emily Blunt in clinging Calvin Klein, Cate Blanchett in Giorgio Armani, and Rinko Kikuchi in Chanel Haute Couture did it best.
