Sanjaya Malakar, the most controversial contestant on this season's American Idol shocked fans when tears fell from his eyes as he sang his final song of the competition. Sanjaya was sent home tonight and millions of viewers are going to be devastated by the upset. 'American Idol' has undergone a great deal of scrutiny this year, especially when Howard Stern targeted 17 year old Sanjaya in his "vote for the worst" campaign. And while many viewers questioned the accuracy of the American Idol voting system, it was clear tonight that there was no conspiracy in this year's competition.

Sanjaya seemed to be one of those contestants that people enjoyed watching and enjoyed listening to. Maybe he wasn't the best singer in the competition but he impressed viewers enough to make it into the final 7. But this week's fate had to come as a shock to Sanjaya who seemed to seamlessly move through the competition with very little difficulty. The judges were never overly impressed with his singing but his dedicated fans never let him down. Not until tonight that is. So where did all of Sanjaya's true fans go to tonight? Regardless of where they went, the numbers speak for themselves. It will only be a matter of time before we see Sanjaya on "The Amazing Race", "Survivor" or "So You Think You Can Dance". This journey is over for Malakar but there's no doubt we haven't seen the last of this kid.
