Rosie Leveraging Daughter for Own Political Satisfaction?

Shocking photos of Rosie O'Donnell's 4 year old daughter, Vivienne, in a soldier's outfit and an ammunition belt have instigated one of the most controversial issues of the summer. Rosie, who is constantly updating her personal site, www.Rosie.com, has been known to post photos and videos of her children while playing and having fun. What caught most people's attention was not the photo itself (although it is somewhat disturbing), it was the fact that Rosie went out of her way to create a video of her daughter looking visibly sad while playing in a soldier's outfit. The video, which is about a minute and a half in length, starts out by saying "Last year a princess..." and finishes with "This year a soldier..."

When confronted by many fans on her website, Rosie began to feel the hostility for posting the pictures. Soon after, she released a statement through her representative which read "Her kids were playing soldier and she took a picture. That's it."

But why would someone who is so clearly against the war in Iraq even have those types of outfits available to their children? Could it be that Rosie deliberately bought the outfit and dressed up her daughter in order to prove a political point? It seems likely. For someone with such strong feelings against the war, playing soldiers should be the last thing on her child's mind. But children learn by the actions of their parents and it's very clear that Rosie spends a significant amount of her time talking about the war. At the age of 4 the only things you know are what you hear. If her daughter is seeing and hearing about the war everyday, she's going to become interested in that subject. The only person responsible for Rosie's daughter changing so significantly in one year is Rosie. She can protect her daughter from this lifestyle but instead she promotes it. If you want your child to play princess again, take away her soldier outfits and give her some barbies. Kids will only play with ammunition belts if you let them - if you don't want them to play with them then don't buy them. It's as simple as that.

Hi Angela. A

I agree with what you are saying. I feel strongly against the war as well and would not let my children play with pretend ammunition and army outfits. It's sending the wrong message to them.

I don't think Rosie is a bad person, I think she just made a mistake. I, like you, agree with her view on the war and feel as though it shouldn't be happening but letting my children play with war outfits and bullets would seem to be hypocritical.

I'm still a rosie fan though.
