Michael Moore, arguably one of the most controversial people in the world, has set himself up with a financial deal unlike any other deal in the movie business. His latest movie 'Sicko' is a documentary targeting profit motives in the United States and how these motives prevent American citizens from receiving the quality medical care they deserve. Michael Moore has also been known for his highly controversial documentaries 'Bowling for Columbine' and 'Fahrenheit 911' which topped the box office as well.
What Michael Moore didn't expect was the amount of money he would potential receive from this movie. Moore's talent agent, Ari Emanuel, negotiated a deal with the Weinstein Co. (who is releasing the film) which will entitle him to 50 percent of the movie's gross profits. To put it in perspective, Moore's 1992 documentary, "Fahrenheit 911" grossed over 220 million dollars - just in box office sales, which set a record for political documentaries. The same type of success would put another 110 million dollars in Michael Moore's pockets. According to the LA times, this is a richer deal than those made with high profile Hollywood actors like Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts.
Here's what Michael had to say about the deal:
“It’s a really interesting irony for me,” he begins. “What it should do to me is remind me every single day that I have an even greater responsibility to do good with the success that I have been blessed with. I need to make sure that I am able to make the next film with the money that I have made on this film. The money allows me to never have to give in, never compromise. Nothing can ever be held over my head in the sense of, ‘If you don’t do this, we won’t give you your money!'. That’s an enormous bit of freedom that I have — to stay completely true to the things I believe in. But I have an even greater responsibility because I have been blessed with that great success. I challenge myself with that, constantly.”
"Sicko" will be released to theaters internationally today.
