Love her or hate her on American Idol, you’re about to be seeing a lot more of Paula Abdul with the debut of her new video, Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow.
We hate to be Cold Hearted, but there isn’t anything particularly nice to say about Paula’s latest attempt to rekindle both her relevancy and her musical career. Shot with wind machines, costumes from both the 80s and the closet of a washed-up burlesque dancer, and yes, cameos by her Idol cohorts, this video has more cheese than a kindergarten picture day.
Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow? We’re not even sure Paula’s going to make it through the video, let alone an entire night of dancing. The singer looks as if her joints are a little rusty after all these years, and she seems content to leave the mad steps to her bevy of young backup dancers while she clings to standby moves of yesteryear.
Not that her backup dancers are faring much better - the video features some of the most bizarre choreography, including interpretive mosh sequences and line routines that conjure up images of our elementary school gymnastics meets. The best moves are provided by Paula’s pal and co-Idol judge Randy Jackson, who bops along on the guitar in the background like he doesn’t have a care in the world.
Do you need to Rush, Rush to see this video? Probably not, unless you enjoy seeing the last ditch efforts to reignite has-been musical careers, a la Britney Spears at the Video Music Awards. But frankly, we don’t even think Paula believes herself in this video, even though she’s giving it her best shot. It’s okay Paula, we know you’re getting older - and really, you don’t have to Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow anymore. Just go home and put your feet up, and we’ll see you again on Idol.
