Oscar Fashion - Ladies in Red

It’s not just you, we were all seeing red at last night’s Oscars…and it wasn’t because of the pick for Best Picture.

A brave move on a red carpet, this year’s Oscar fashion trend was just that – red. But rather than blend in with the background, you could count on the dresses to either shine or shock. Here’s a look at our picks for the best and worst ladies in red:

Red Done Right

From left to right, here's a look at the women who made red ravishing. (Click on photos to enlarge).

Katherine Heigl. From hair to accessories to this beautiful red silk georgette Escada gown, Katherine looked every bit her gorgeous self on the red carpet, but it’s the shoulder detail that really clinched this dress for us.

Anne Hathaway. Even in the most elegant of dresses, Anne seems to have an effortless beauty about her. Her groomed-yet-simple ponytail is the perfect complement to this floral embellished Marchesa gown.

Helen Mirren. The sleeves on this dress are taking a lot of flak in the media, but we think they add a playful yet age-appropriate flavor to her Georges Chakra gown that is a reflection of Mirren herself. She looks smashing as always!

Red Gone Wrong

Not every red dress was a yes on the red carpet. From left to right, here's a look at the gowns that missed the mark. (Click on photos to enlarge.)

Julie Christie. Christie will have to shoulder most of the blame for this strange concoction, as she designed it herself with help from her stylist / costume designer Tanya Gill. We favored Mirren’s sleeves but these sleeve gloves are just too much.

Miley Ray Cyrus. It’s not that the dress is bad in itself, but if you’re going to stand out in the red sea, you need a little extra pizazz (see Katherine’s shoulder loop). For someone as young and fun as Miley, we expected something a little more lively than this plain-Jane Valentino.

Heidi Klum. Someone should’ve told Heidi that the red carpet would be provided, because apparently she brought her own – with enough fabric left over for one heck of a neckwarmer. This John Galliano dress doesn’t even come close to doing justice to Heidi’s beauty.

Oh Baby!

We just couldn’t help but make note of the number of mommies-to-be on the red carpet last night and how fantastic they looked. From left to right we’ve got Nicole Kidman (seen with her leading man Keith Urban) in Balenciaga, Jessica Alba in Marchesa and Cate Blanchett in Dries Van Noten, all showing that the perfect accessory to a beautiful gown is that special glow.
