It’s been well over a month since the shocking death of 28-year-old actor Heath Ledger, but the news stories continue to follow.
Over the weekend, the details of Ledger’s will were examined, and it was found that neither ex-love Michelle Williams nor the former couple’s two-year-old daughter, Matilda Rose, were named as beneficiaries.
However, as both legal representation and Ledger’s family were quick to point out, this was not due to any deliberate action on the part of the young actor, but simply that his will had not been updated since its creation in 2003 – before Ledger’s relationship began with Williams, and well before the birth of his daughter. In the document, the actor left all his assets to his parents and sister.
It’s been reported that two estranged members of the Ledger family have been fueling media fires since the actor’s untimely death, and have been publicly speculating on just how Ledger’s assets will be divided given his outdated will. Ledger’s immediate family have responded heatedly, putting to rest any rumors that Williams and daughter Matilda will not be provided for in the future.
“Matilda is our absolute priority and Michelle is an integral part of our family," Heath’s father, Kim Ledger, stated to the press. “They will be taken care of and that’s how Heath would want it to be.”
He continued, “It is sad at this extremely difficult time in our lives, while we are grieving the loss of our beloved son that estranged family members publicly discuss matters they have not been privy to in the past or now. We hope for Matilda's sake they will remain dignified."
Since Ledger’s passing, Michelle Williams has stayed out of the spotlight, and continues to focus all her attention on her daughter. In an interview with Vogue magazine conducted just weeks before Ledger’s passing, Michelle explained how caring for Matilda is her top priority and how the young toddler has helped her cope with the difficulty of her breakup with Ledger. “She’s bigger than any heartbreak ever could be,” Williams said of her daughter – we only hope those words continue to be true.
