Priscilla Presley is doing the unprecedented. No, it’s not her appearance on
Dancing With the Stars because we all saw that coming. The former queen to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll is coming clean about her experiences with cosmetic surgery, after the doctor who botched her up in 2003 was released from prison last week.
Dr. Daniel Serrano (who was a doctor in Argentina but was unlicensed in the U.S.) was arrested by federal agents and sentenced to 18 months in jail for importing and distributing a non-FDA approved substance, which he used in cosmetic procedures on unsuspecting clients.
The substance, which the doctor advertised to clients as a wrinkle remover that was better than Botox, was actually reported to be an industrial-grade silicone used to lubricate car parts. It caused lumps, bumps and even facial paralysis and holes in the face in many patients. Besides Priscilla, other famous victims of Dr. Serrano include Lionel Richie’s ex-wife Diane and Shawn King, wife of television talk show host Larry King.
In a time where most celebs deny, deny, deny going under the knife – even when it’s as plain as the nose on Ashlee Simpson’s face - we’re pleased to see a celeb opening up about her experiences with cosmetic procedures. Maybe if more of our idols shared their scare tales we’d see less people willing to risk dangerous surgeries.
And maybe we’d see a more realistic and honest portrayal of beauty. At 62, Presley is an attractive woman, but the evidence of “work” is always there, just as it is in many celebs we tout as beautiful. Let’s face it, most celebs – even those who are aging – need cosmetic surgery like most of us need another shot to our fragile self esteem. And unfortunately, when even the most stunning stars feel the need to push the limits of natural beauty, that’s exactly what we get.
