Put on your thick glasses – we’re about to get scientific!
With spring and love in the air, Hollywood couples have been coming out of the woodwork. From Rihanna and Chris Brown to whomever Chace Crawford is with this week (Gossip Girl co-star Michelle Trachtenberg, perhaps?), we can hardly keep up with who’s hooking up with whom.
But one love trend we have noticed brought us back to our high school science class on Newton’s laws of motion:
“For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.”
In Hollywood-speak, this loosely explains all the new twosomes we’re seeing – for every couple we love, there is an equal and opposite couple we love to hate. Let’s take a look at the two sides of this love equation.
Cute + Smart = True Love Forever

We love, love, love Cameron Diaz and new beau Gerard Butler. These two have been seen gazing at sunsets and cuddling up to each other in hot nightclubs (if you can say that a 6ft-plus, ripped Spartan can cuddle, that is), and have even been double-dating with seasoned adorable couple Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Although the new twosome has yet to make it official, we are so ready to forget about Cammie and Justin Timberlake that we’ll pretend they are anyway. We haven’t seen a couple this cute since Drew Barrymore and Justin Long!
Bored + Available = Flavor of the Week

We never expected them to make it to spring, but Paris Hilton and Benji Madden continue to besmirch the good name of PDAs well into the warm weather months. (On the plus side, Benji could use the sun!)
It seems a little too convenient that the self-proclaimed “happy and in love” Paris is following in her BFF’s footsteps by hooking up with a Madden, and we have a hard time believing that she and Benji have what it takes to make it in a serious relationship – that is something beyond shopping excursions, groupie status, and giggly MySpace posts.
This is one couple that can’t be explained by logic or science, and is certainly on the other side of the spectrum when it comes to our favorite celebrity couples.
Scientific evidence emerges every day to support our hypothesis on love in Hollywood - turns out that Newton was a pretty smart guy. Just goes to show you, stay in school kiddies. You never know where the lessons you learn will take you!
