Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus may have been caught posing provocatively with a boy and (on a different occasion) sharing a piece of candy with a girl, but the latest controversy surrounding the 15-year-old Disney star has to do with a professional topless photo shoot – one for Vanity Fair Magazine.
It seems as though it’s Miley Cyrus against Annie Leibovitz in this battle over moral rights. Annie took a photo of Miley wearing only a blanket and has released it to the world in the photo shoot. Needless to say, Miley is devastated that the photo was released, claiming that she initially thought the pic would be artistic, but later saw the photo and deemed it “inappropriate.”
According to PEOPLE, Miley’s parents (her father was involved in the photo shoot as well) were on set when the photo shoot was taking place but left before the last photo (the topless one) was taken. The magazine also reports that Miley’s grandmother and teacher were still on set when the last photo was taken.
But the controversy continues as Miley tries to defend the provocative pics. According to PEOPLE, Miley said the following:
“My goal in my music and my acting is always to make people happy. For Vanity Fair, I was so honored and thrilled to work with Annie. I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed.
“The pictures of me on the Internet were silly, inappropriate shots. I appreciate all the support of my fans, and hope they understand that along the way I am going to make mistakes and I am not perfect.
“I never intended for any of this to happen and I am truly sorry if I have disappointed anyone. Most of all, I have let myself down. I will learn from my mistakes and trust my support team. My family and my faith will guide me through my life’s journey.”
But according to the New York Times, Miley was impressed with Annie’s shots, quoting the following:
“Annie took, like, a beautiful shot, and I thought it was really cool,” says the teen sensation, according to the newspaper.
“That’s what she wanted me to do, and you can’t say no to Annie.” She also said of the photo, “I think it’s really artsy. It wasn’t in a skanky way.”
Another photo scandal for the 15-year-old pop tart.
