Looks like Lindsay Lohan is following in Britney Spears’ footsteps. The face behind the now infamous mugshot is taking a stab at good old-fashioned acting (rather than acting crazy), and is slated to take on a role in ABC’s May 22nd season finale of Ugly Betty.

No details are yet confirmed on Lindsay’s character on the show, but a hapless fast food worker is one speculation. Like Britney who played a ditzy dental assistant on How I Met Your Mother, it seems lovable she-goons are the hot ticket role for rebellious celebs looking for work.

Over the weekend we reported on LiLo’s liberated mugshot, which was used in a liquor company sponsored ad on the topic of ignition interlock systems. But today on Lindsay-watch, we thought we’d skip the science-y stuff and go back to the star’s roots.

Let’s have a little cinco de mayo fun and talk about her career for once, rather than her reputation.

In terms of her acting gigs, Lindsay’s been in a bit of a funk, with box office stink-bombs like I Know Who Killed Me and Georgia Rule. And we won’t even discuss her musical career, which basically is one long, self-indulgent sob-fest about how broken her home is and how the press just needs to leave her alone. (Hmm, what’s Miley Cyrus listening to these days?)

But just like Britney’s appearance on HIMYM, we’re thinking that LiLo taking on a lighthearted role on an established sitcom might be a good way to get her career back on track.

Let’s face it, being plastered over the tabloids for her latest Grey Goose DUI or her nighttime antics with Samantha Ronson is not the best way for Lindsay to get back in our good graces. But if she steps away from the crazy just a little and puts some effort into this acting gig, we could just see a return to the fresh-scrubbed, befreckled redhead we all know and love.

It’s rumored that, if things go well in the finale, Lindsay might be asked to reprise her role in Ugly Betty’s fourth season by signing on for a whopping eight episodes. Who knows, with some steady work, she just might have what it takes to stay out of rehab and stay on the screen.

Could it be that Lindsay pulling a Britney might actually mean something good?
