Whitney Thompson – First Full-Figured America’s Next Top Model Winner!

Whitney Thompson was not only crowned the winner of America’s Next Top Model during last night’s finale but she also made history by being the first plus-sized model to win the cut-throat competition.

Whitney, who started the show as a buxom brunette but transformed into a bubbly blonde after the model makeovers, struggled with being the only plus size model in the competition but ultimately ended up stealing the prize from her co-finalist Anya.

       ANTM Winner Whitney Thomspon

Whitney was not only the first bootilicious babe awarded with the coveted title but she was the first full-figured model to walk the cat-walk in a super high-fashion runway show for Versace.

And while Tyra ticked off more than a few of her fans last year by crowning Saleisha the winner when she had already had previous modeling experience (and even modeled at Tyra’s T-Zone camp), we want to know what you think about Tyra’s decision this year.

Do you think Whitney deserved to win ANTM – or do you think Tyra made the wrong decision once again?

I think it's great that Whitney won the competition.  It's about time that we see a "real" woman win.  She's beautiful, takes stunning photos and looked awesome at the runway for Versace.  I'm happy for her, however I hope that the industry does NOT make her loose weight. She won as a full-figured model, she should stay a full-figured model.

This may increase the pressure on the industry & on designers to stop allowing & encouraging other top models to use drugs, eating disorders etc to stay stick-sick thin. I will wait to see if Whitney is still beautiful and at a healthy weight next year. Chances are the pressure to be thin will win in the end. Sadly.

It was definitely the right choice. She's gorgeous and has a beautiful body. She looks healthy and she's got attitude. I'd aspire to her style before any of the stick-thin models'.

I've barely watched the show because I was just disgusted with the arbitrary and just plainly mean way the show not only defined beauty in its contestants but at all.  Fashion modeling is slowly but surely divorcing itself as a pursuit for attractive women because it relies on standards of glamor having only a coincidental link to beauty, and sometimes completely against it.

THE GOOD:  wow, what a hottie - acres of flesh perfectly shaped; possessed of a proud, enticing, almost erotic manner and hair that won't look bad no matter what's done with it.  Those bikini pix were amazing - even with the return of hip-hugger bottoms, I can't remember when I last saw the hip/waist so brazenly approach triangular; that navel is incredible!!

THE BAD:  I can't think of a bad thing to say about her.  What does bother me is the way that everybody characterizes this as a victory for "real women".  First off, contrary to what our media says when it claims to be speaking for us, the world is not just slightly blessed with women having figures resembling those of models.  Twiggies are just as much real women as not-so-Twiggies.  My real complaint is this - we're calling her big when she really isn't that big.  It's good to see that were pushing the bounds of acceptance, but calling a size 10 woman "plus size" doesn't push those bounds very far, arguably continuing to marginalize the real plus-size women (you're not just fat, you're a fatty among other fatsos) while sanitizing the modeling industry's reliance on Twiggies (they can always point to Whitney whle evincing a clear preference for grown women haing little-girl bodies).

Now, don't get the wrong idea that I prefer large women (I don't, but if they had their version of a Whitney, I would be amenable to reconsideration), or that I wished Whitney was larger (Wouldn't be averse to her going up a size; Has anybody ever seen that movie "Village of the Giants"?  Something like that only with her belly and her..um..bottom).  It's just this obvious hypocrisy or delusion common to the modeling industry.

The claim is that Whitney did not try out for top model but was approached on a plane by someone from the show. She was already doing modeling as a size 2 or 4 but because she was closer to a 4 she was a little too big for the show as a regular model. They told her that if she went and gained 10-20 pounds they would definitely put her on the show as "the plus-size model". She's about a 6 or 8 on the show.

Anya should have won...let's face it, she has more potential as a model, especially high fashioned, plus she is "somewhat" down to earth. Whitney still seems bitchy and fake to me but I really don't know anything about her.
