Actress Portia De Rossi and TV personality Ellen DeGeneres are celebrating a Supreme Court ruling in the most de-lightful way – the California court’s decision has lifted the ban on gay marriage, so the two are getting married!

They may have to get in line, however, as the new ruling has sent dozens of couples to the city clerk’s office to apply for marriage licenses. It seems they’re getting a jump start however, as no licenses can be issued for dates within the next 30 days, the time it takes for the ruling to take effect.

Still, the decision is huge, and Ellen and Portia will be celebrating on national television. Reports say that after discussing the Supreme Court decision on a taping for her show, which will air today, Ellen made the exciting announcement that she and Portia would take their 4-year relationship to the next level. Portia was in the audience to share in the happy news.

The audience for the show was overwhelmingly thrilled, and so are we – not just for the happy couple, but for the decision California has made to lift the ban and allow gay couples to marry. They are only the second state to do so, joining Massachusetts, but it could be the beginning of a progressive trend.

“Limiting the designation of marriage to a union ‘between a man and a woman’ is unconstitutional and must be stricken from the statute,” California Chief Justice Ron George stated. Three other members of the panel agreed, making for a 4 to 3 victory in favor of gay marriages.

The reaction to Ellen’s big news on her show likely paled in comparison to that of gay rights activists after the Supreme Court’s announcement.

“It’s the best day of my life, quite honestly I’m thrilled for all of us,” said Diane Olsen, who was on hand for the ruling and who's partner was a plaintiff in the case.
