Film Community Mourns Death of Sydney Pollack, Acclaimed Actor and Director

Sydney Pollack Just yesterday, legendary actor and director Sydney Pollack succumbed to a 9-month battle with cancer at his home in Pacific Palisades, at the age of 73.

Pollack, who is renowned for directing classic films such as Out of Africa and The Way We Were, began his career in the 1960s and has garnered a number of accolades including Oscar gold in the Best Director and Best Picture category for Out of Africa.

According to a statement from Pollack’s publicist, the actor was said to be surrounded by family at the time of his passing. He is survived by his wife Claire and two daughters.

Along with the family who mourn, the acting community too has been by Pollack’s passing. Some of Hollywood’s finest are speaking out on the revered and respected actor / director, including George Clooney who worked with Pollack in Michael Clayton and more recently Leatherheads.

“Sydney made the world a little better, movies a little better and even dinner a little better,” the actor said in a statement. “A tip of the hat to a class act. He’ll be missed terribly.”

Pollack’s acting credits are as widespread and diverse as his directing projects. He took on roles in high profile movies such as Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut and Woody Allen’s Husbands and Wives, and also played parts on the small screen, taking guest parts in hit sitcoms like Will & Grace, Frasier, and even The Sopranos.

The late actor / director attributed much of his success in directing to his acting background, claiming it gave him a unique perspective.

“Most of the great directors that I know of were not actors, so I can’t tell you it’s a requirement,” he said at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival, adding, “On the other hand, it’s an enormous help.”

Take a look at a scene from Tootsie, which Pollack both directed and acted in alongside Dustin Hoffman, and watch the skill of the two as they rail on the banality of tomato-acting. Just a small glimpse at a longstanding and well-respected career.

The film community has lost a great talent.
