Jessica Simpson’s first country track “Come On Over” is out, and you know what that means – break out the cowboy hats and get your boots stompin’! (But maybe spare us your Daisy Dukes.)
We first heard about the blonde pop princess trading in her sickly sweet tracks for...well...country sickly sweet tracks a few months ago. According to Simpson, she wanted to “go back to her roots, being from Texas,” but we think she just wants another excuse to look slammin’ in the Dukes and cowboy hat of her Hazzard days...as if she needs one!
Surprisingly, the most logical explanation for Jessica’s crossover has come from Papa Joe Simpson, who took a breather from talking about his daughter’s jugs to discuss her new album.
“Everything in our business is about beats, and I think she really wants to sing, and country music still believes in that,” Joe expounded. “She’s a singer from top to bottom. And everything in the music business, especially pop music, has moved away from singers. And I think country is the only pure, storytelling kind of genre left.”
Fairly sensible, if you disregard the fact that phrases like "top to bottom" automatically sound pervy when coming from Joe. Jessica does have great pipes and really seems to enjoy singing.
So how’s the song? Well... “Come on Over” isn’t a whole lot better than Jessica’s pop tracks, namely it features her super voice but is pretty blah lyrically and melodically.
While you might say you could expect that from a country song (if you didn’t fear getting a sharp spur in the behind from an angry cowboy), we were looking for a little pizzazz from the fun-loving blonde, hearkening to the early days of Shania Twain. And while there are traces of that here, we think Jessica just needs to season herself in a little more Texas sauce before she’s ready for the Grand Ole Opry.
Still it has to be said: Jessica’s song does not suck. At least not any worse than her other tracks, and hey, we secretly love those! But regardless of how good the song is, we’re giving Jessica major Cheetos for sticking to her six-shooters and trying something new and supposedly more authentic to her real self.
We love you Jess! With or without Tony Romo! (On a completely unrelated note, that is.)
Listen to her track below and tell us what you think.
