New ads for the hit CW show Gossip Girl have everyone talking – and some people downright furious with the network’s marketing tactics.
The show, which follows the lives of boys and girls in their late teens, has been scrutinized for their racy ad campaigns since they first launched the show and are only fuelling the fire with their new promos.

The ad that has everyone talking features a close up of GG hottie Blake Lively with the face of a boy licking (or practically attacking) her neck. The promiscuous shot is showcased just above the tagline “Every Parent’s Worst Nightmare.”
And this isn’t the show’s only promo ad that has parents’ panties in a twist. Other shots have characters in all sorts of provocative poses with headlines like “A Nasty Piece of Work” and “Mind-Blowingly Inappropriate.”
The network has received more than its fair share of controversy over their racy ads. Their previous campaign also featured a very sexy photo with an accompanying phrase reading “OMFG.”
"I think it reeks of desperation, if they have to position themselves as so edgy and so controversial that they've been called out by us," said Melissa Henson, PTC (Parents Television Council) director of communications.
But Gossip Girl marketing director, Rick Haskins, insists on defending the campaigns, claiming "What we're trying to do is communicate with the audience in a way that they like and can appreciate."
The objective was finding "well-written headlines that are provocative and would catch our viewers' attention," he continues. "And, in a tongue-in-cheek way, capture what the show is about."
Sex, drugs and lies are what the show is based on.
Do you think the racy ads are appropriate – or do you think these types of photos and headlines make the show seem like they’re trying too hard to get attention?
