Elisha Cuthbert Exclusive: Sean Avery "Sloppy Seconds" Remark Results in Suspension!

The NHL has decided to suspend Dallas Stars winger Sean Avery for a remark he made before Tuesday’s game against the Calgary Flames.

Sean Avery/ Elisha CuthbertSean, who had a semi-serious relationship with actress Elisha Cuthbert for quite some time, seems to be on the defence about her new love interest – fellow NHL player Dion Phaneuf.

So what exactly could Sean have said to get him “suspended indefinitely?”

Avery told TSN the following:

"I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada. I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about. Enjoy the game tonight."

We agree that the comment is a little immature. In fact, it sounds like something straight out of ninth grade, but, in a sport where grown men drop their gloves and pound the crap out of each other with relatively no consequences, this punishment seems a little harsh.

Too extreme or not, the NHL is legally allowed to take action. Article 6 of the NHL constitution states that suspension is legal due to any conduct "detrimental to the League or game of hockey."

But it wasn’t just league officials that were angered by Avery’s comments. Dallas stars owner, Thomas Hicks made the following statement in regards to Avery’s comments:

"I completely support the league’s decision to suspend Sean Avery. Had the league not suspended him, the Dallas Stars would have."

And fellow teammate Marco Turco told the press "we expect that out of him, like we have all year and...uh...ya...so it continues."

Avery's future as an NHL player seems to be dwindling faster than his former relationship with Ms. Cuthbert.

I can’t believe he may have lost it all for washed up, puck bunny Elisha Cuthbert (who has also dated Montreal Canadiens’ defenceman Mike Komisarek).

Sean will meet with officials to solidify the consequences for his remarks.

Do you think Sean should be suspended indefinitely?

this guy is a jerk, he uses foul language, he makes rude comments to get into the minds of the opposition, it's obviously something his teammates don't want to be closely involved with, nor should they be- this isn't a surprise to anyone. What is surprising is how the league has overreacted to his latest vulgar insult. I bet if puckbunny Cuthbert were just an average unknown girl, and not a celebrity, this whole issue would be a non issue. It would still be rude, vulgar, and insulting (just like every other Avery comment), it would still cause a stir, but if she wasn't a celebrity who dates multiple hockey players no one (including the nhl) would really care SO much about this.

Seems a bit harsh a punishment despite the barf-o-riffic expression "sloppy seconds". If i were Elisha Cuthbert i'd get on TV and announce to the world that Sean Avery has a small pee-pee. That would be a more fitting punishment.

And it would make me laugh : )

I first saw the clip of him on my local news station and then again on Inside Edition and both networks bleeped out the "sloppy seconds" part and so I was wondering what he said and then to find out it was only "sloppy seconds" and not curse words or something a whole lot worse, I was confused as to why that was such a big deal?! Yeah it was rude but I've heard much worse from celebrities about each other and this seems childish and jealous on his part and a harsh punishment on the NHL's part....whatever, I just don't get the gravity of it all!

Major hockey markets in the northern U.S. and all over Canada have told this tail to death. While some people think his comments are not suspendable a lot more think the opposite. I don't care how many men Ms. Cuthbert has dated from the NHL or otherwise... she's still someone's daughter and should not be referred to in that way. Yes!! he deserves a suspension and probably a monetary fine. Much worse than this has been said and done both on and off the ice but involving someone's girlfriend in a war of words has no place in any game.

Many U.S. "Entertainment" media outlets comment on the fact that we allow fighting in hockey yet we are suspending someone for his immature comments. While Hockey is believed to be a Canadian sport in some people's minds there are major followings in some U.S. markets and a great number of talented U.S. born players. Since these (writers) people have probably never laced up a pair of skates and played the game at a professional level I would advise them to do so or keep their mouths shut. I dislike the Baseball and don't pretend to understand or enjoy Soccer but I respect the people involved that dedicate their lives to becoming the best at their sport.
