I'm no fan of the Miss USA pageant but it is wrong for people to try to persecute Miss California for her remarks.  She's entitled to her views and Perez Hilton is a gay creep for attacking her like he is.

I am not labeling her as close minded because she doesn't believe in what I believe in. I believe that people can make choices for themselves. Who are we to tell someone else how to live? Who are we to tell someone they can't get married to the person they love? Who is Miss California to say that gay or lesbian couples shouldn't be able to get married? How does their marriage affect her in any way? Obviously, this is just my opinion and others are welcome to share theirs (that's why I posted your comment) but it makes me sick to think that people believe they can make choices for others - or want to criticize them for something they have no control over. God forbid her children - or any of the children in her family - have gay children. That would be simply unacceptable, right?

Carrie telling the world that she doesn't think gay or lesbian couples should marry is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I'd like to propose a new law that states that anyone who has a brain the size of a pea can't get married either - then Miss California would be screwed. She can't help that she's dumb just like gays can't help who they're attracted to. If she thinks she has the right to say that they can't marry, we should all be able to say that we don't think she should marry. I don't personally have any issues with gay marriage, but I hate things like this, because it shows off the worse side of the pro gay marriage cause: their intolerance for anyone who believes differently from what they do.  

She is articulate and admirable. I am impressed at her courteousness and grace as she cautiously but firmly stated the facts and presented her opinion which she was asked for. I never said anything about Perez Hilton's reaction. I don't think it was mature of him to call her a dumb b*tch (even though she seems like one) but I think you both would feel very differently if somoene told you that you couldn't marry the person you love. What if someone said anyone with blonde hair can't get married...or anyone taller than 6 ft can't married....or anyone shorter than 5 ft can't get married. We have no control over these things and yet no one is telling you that you can't marry the person you love. They get so mad about it because their rights have been taken away. You obviously don't understand the situation because you're not directly affected. That's what closemindedness means to me. If it were your rights in question I'm sure you'd both have different opinions.

I think it is a pitiful shame that most people who are gay or nudist or some other way different from the "norm" are put out so very much when a person speaks an opinion that differs from them.  Holy COw PLEASE!! I think that this contestant was approprite in answering the way that she saw fit, and not according to what the person asking the question wanted to hear. I am actually a supporter of same sex marriage; however, the whole point of living in America is freedom of speech and the right to have our own beliefs.

I think this Perez Hilton is completely out of line for his comments- he does not know this young woman as a person and calling her names is only making himself look inappropriate.

Also, the coordinators are largely to blame for this occurring. To have someone with a known temperment such as Hilton ask a question such as this was unfair to this contestant. He was obviously only going to applaud one answer and made her answer look bad.

I, along with many others, see her as a role model. I hope she keeps her head high and continues to pursue her pageants and goals.

God forbid someone actually have an opinion that differs from the "progressive idealism" forced down people's throats from hollywood.

Anyone who is offended by Prejean's response (which are shared by a large portion of the worldwide population) needs to wake up and realise that they are offending just as many people by their own pro-gay marriage stance.

You can't grant license to the communication of pro-gay and lesbian views, and then turn around and censure those who have a different opinion.  If you want freedom of speech, then get used to hearing things you don't want to hear, just like the rest of us.

Perez Hitlon's remarks regarding Prejean's answer were immature, hypocritical and vengeful - if anyone should be reprimanded for behaviour not becoming a public figure or role model, it is people who react as Hilton did.

The last time I checked, honesty, bravery and conviction were positive attributes to be applauded and admired.  Evidently there are still many who believe it.

It's nice to know that there are still those out there who would support such a strong voice in such a dark society...I support Carrie and I support our freedom of speech! Opposite marriage? A land that you choose? She should have said: "We live in a land where you can choose to talk drivel in public."

I applaud Miss California for the answer she gave. She was answering the question true to her beliefs.Isn't that why we live in this country to express our opinions without being afraid of being ridiculed. Thjis is a free country on both sides of the issue.

I am a gay person and I don't believe in same sex marriage. I've had the same partner for 18 years and we are very happy together and will be till the day we die. We do not need a marraige license to validate our love for each other and what we believe in. We have great family support from both sides.

It is stupid if Perez Hilton thinks that all gays think like he does. He is a disgrace to the gays who are backing him up. I am very proud to be a conservative gay and am very happy that there are a lot of gays like me out there.

Since the Miss America Pageant feels it is acceptable to punish contestants for their religious beliefs, is the Miss America Pageant run by atheists who do not believe in the freedom of religion granted by the first amendment of our constitution? I cannot believe that Donald Trump invests all this money into a beauty pageant and then allows for some punk-ass BIASED JUDGED CALLED PEREZ HILTON to SINGLE-HANDEDLY screw the frontrunner off her crown at the last minute.  IT'S SHAMEFUL! The beauty pageants had little credibility but after Miss California didn't win last night, it has even LESS credibility.  If I were Miss North Carolina, I would do the right thing.  Carrie Prejean was the frontrunner and she was judged unfairly for her Christian beliefs by a homosexuals, if she's really the North Carolina girl she professes to be, I'd resign the crown and give it to Miss California.  She's be the first winner ever to do such a think and she'd be doing the right thing. To David above: David you made my point exactly by your comments.  You are assuming that my love for people is conditional because I don't agree with their lifestyle.  Thats not fair and you know it.  So what you are saying is, that if I voice my true feelings about a "behavior, or lifestyle" and say that I don't think it is right, then the assumption is I don't love unconditionally.  David the only way to truly love someone unconditionally IS when you love the individual in spite of your differences of opinion.

You have confirmed what is my biggest challenge with the whole "politically correct" movement that says if you don't agree with me you hate me.  That is an extremely "intolerant" and immature thought process.

The question was a preemptive strike.  Undoubtedly, the contestants are carefully screened to determine their views before they ever get to the pageant.  The Donald, who is seriously egotistical and eager to influence everyone to adopt his view of the world, does not want Miss USA to say anything that he does not agree with.  Therefore, the question was posed to Carrie Prejean.  If she had said she supports gay marriage, he would then have known she'd say anything he wanted her to say, even if it violated her convictions.  Then she would have been Miss USA.  Since she was not willing to sell her soul, she did not win the pageant.

All things considered, she won.

I think it's a pity and a crying shame when someone expresses their opinion in this country where we supposedly have freedom of speech and a right to our own beliefs, they get slammed and attacked in such a manner. It says a lot about what we are as a society and the kind of legacy we are leaving to our children. Whether you support gay marriage or not, every individual should be able to stand for what he/she believes in. Carrie Prejean did just that and Perez Hilton should have had the courtesy to respect that someone had an opinion different from his. He asked her opinion and she gave it.

Its fairly ironic you have called this woman stupid. She has suggested that she considers the concept of marriage to be between a man and a woman. This is an entirely reasonable statement, as this is how many people actually define marriage. She hasn't objected to a civil ceremony which would grant the same rights. So what is the problem? Gay people shouldn't get married in a Church because Christianity does not permit it, simple as that. Anywhere else they can knock them selves out. This whole thing was a planned publicity stunt. Trump allowing Hilton to be a judge in this pageant, itself, shows controversial and poor judgment. Hilton asking such a question to the ‘California’ contestant, asking for her opinion, knowing full well he could strike no matter what she would say. This young lady gave a perfectly valid opinion, but not what this jerk wanted to hear so he could exploit his cause. I have noted many of the reports state there was a lot of booing when Panjean answered… All I could hear was cheers and applause, this says a lot about truth in reporting.  Then there is NBC behind the scenes… we know where that dictated policy comes from… This whole thing is a joke, except for the young lady that actually has some values and was brave enough to stand up in front of the world and express them knowing full well that politics would probably cut her down. Personally I believe a law suit would be appropriate. Hollywood and Television are allowing these folks to constantly use Beauty Pageants, Award Ceremonies and the like, to become the soap boxes for political crap. No wonder no one is watching them anymore, movies are going to take a major hit soon.

As far as marriage for gays… get over it… ‘marriage’ has been defined for thousands of years as the ‘union between a man and a woman’. Get creative, create a new word and define it yourself, but you can’t change the definition of marriage and more than you can change black meaning black, it is not pink now just because someone wants it different. I know Carrie well. I was her teacher in high school, her ASB Advisor when she was Student Body Present and she was my daughters best friend in high school.

I find it interesting that many of you stand in judgement of a young woman who you don't even know. She is fair, honest and has strong character and in America, entitled to her own views. My sister married a man and had two children then divorced and "married" a woman.  The problem is simply language.  It doesn't go any deeper than that now adays.  You can insist as often as you like that the colour yellow is red.  But its still yellow.   The world needs a word that covers the concept of "Marriage" between a woman and a woman (yellow) or a man and a man (orange maybe).  The word is not marriage (red).  Lets all put our heads together and come up with a new word.  There are 100,000 new words created each year.  Come on Lets do it and end this hurtful discourse.

01) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

02) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

03) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

04) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

05) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

Do not judge her. She believes that is what it should be. She is standing up for what she believes in. That does NOT make her a bad person. Everyone out there judging her is crazy insane. I have a lot of thoughts on this topic but the most important one is a lesson I learned long ago - "The only thing about people with absolute beliefs is that they are absolutely wrong."  While I agree with Ms. Prejean's comments, I would have respected her just as much if she had espoused the opposite, (even though I would have disagreed with those comments).  What is important is that she speaks what she believes, but is also open minded to the rights of others to have different beliefs.  Others should also respect her right to speak what she believes.  Mr. Hilton and others (on both sides of the equation) who are close-minded to the thought that others could have beliefs different than theirs have a lot to learn and are poor examples for society.  Ms. Prejean, from everything I've seen is someone who should hold her head up high as a shining example of what's good about our society.

And with the help of Greek and Hebrew scholars I could concoct a translation of the New Testament that would forbid laughing on Sundays. Every version of the Bible has been created by ordinary people, just as every version of the Yellow Pages has been.

What's that adage that was created by Alexander Pope? Something about the danger of a little learning?
